The new Hoffman Challenge fabric is posted on their
web site in case anyone wants a peek before it goes on the market. It seems to be a large scale print, unlike the usual all-over pattern, and although it's very pretty, that seems to me more difficult to work with. I find it harder to think outside the box when something is so clearly representational, but I'm sure some people will do interesting things with it. They did with the cherries a few years ago, and I thought that one was hopeless!
Hmm, Fons & Porter's episode last week (in our Nashville PBS market) was on the very subject of large prints, and how that's the new trend. Needless to say, the quilt they made was easy-peasy. (Which I think is the intent of the designers--a means of getting newbies into QuiltWorld.) Not very interesting to me.
ReplyDeleteI so agree!
ReplyDeleteIf the new trend in large prints encourages more people to jump in, that's not a bad thing. Being a newbie myself, I wouldn't want to discourage someone from taking baby steps with "entry-level" patterns and fabric designs. But I think the large prints will have limited appeal and the trend probably will pass in time.
ReplyDeleteI love Jane Sassaman's prints and they are impossible to do anything with well. I was just thinking the other day about next year's challenge. I'll have to go take a peek.
ReplyDeleteI thought the cherries were pretty hopeless too.. But the Baltimore Album quilt made with the cherries was awesome!
ReplyDeletere: large scale prints - they are great for fussy applique...
ReplyDeleteMy GF suprises me with what she does with them. I don't care for them much myself...
I have a couple of huge scale cat prints - they are probably destined to be backs...
I looked and I like it! I could actually use my idea for this year's challenge and go one step further with next year's fabric. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteKay, thanks for the heads up. I'm having a love/hate relationship with this fabric. I can see where Debra would love it... Debra, we are expecting grand things from you in 2007!
