Friday Collage

One of my favorite paintings is "Love of Winter" by George Bellows, American, 1913. I visit it every time we go to the Art Institute of Chicago. I'm not sure what I like so much, but I think it's the colors: the dark blueish greens, and that one splash of bright acid yellow. So today I tried to abstract it, emphasizing the blocks of dark and lights and the colors. I just pinned the pieces to fleece, layered net on top, and did a minimum of stitching to hold everything down and to try not to successfully to capture the random splashes of yellow Bellows scattered in the background. I don't think it's too bad, although about half way through I almost trashed it. Needs more stitching to give depth I think, but that's it for now.

Kay, I think you did a great job! that's a good idea you have to "abstract" a favorite painting. will have to add that to my list of things I should try.

I love it! It has always been difficult for me to do abstract, so this is very inspiring!

How interesting, Kay! I expected to see an abstract painting as I scrolled down. What a nice interpretation you did.

Well, after reading Annie's comment, I don't have to write mine out. She wrote almost word for word what I was thinking. I have several favorite paintings in my ideas notebook and now realize that I could do some small collages to see if they are something I want to do more with. I really like your method of using net on your collages.
Your cards are great also. Cute saying on your sister's card.

I love the abstract work. I think about doing abstract and then I shy away. But I think this is very cool. (Maybe that is why I want to teach math instead of English. Not a lot of abstract in the math...)
