This morning I put a batch of cookies in the oven, and was standing at the counter mixing up the next ones. Suddenly I heard a thumping sound coming from my stove, turned around and saw flames shooting from under the floor of the oven where the heating element is. I turned the oven off, no harm done, except to the under-baked cookies. By an interesting coincidence, the repair man is coming this afternoon to replace the heating element on the largest top burner. That repair will cost about three hundred dollars total. My range is a year and a half old, off warranty, of course. I guess I got a lemon. I wonder if they will give me a free diagnosis call for this new problem.
There goes the rest of the Christmas baking. Is that a bad thing?
Update: The nice man came, took off the oven floor, and found that the element had broken into three pieces (that was the thud) and so obviously burst into flames from the loose ends. The element only costs $40 and the labor will be about $20, so this is much less than the upper element. Of course, the part is not in stock, so we won't have an oven for a while. As my sister says, that does take the pressure off. She's thinking of sabotaging hers until after Christmas.

yikes! Good thing you were hanging out in the kitchen when that happened! Maybe you could ask Maytag for a loaner? Or a gift certificate for your local bakery?
Poor Kay! I had a recent fire in my stove too, but it was my own darn fault.
I seems like the repair man should be able to address both problems without the extra expense of a second service charge.
I like the backed goods at Grandma Costco's myself!
Bummer man. Bummer for you and bummer for any potential cookie monsters. I empathize with both. Sorry about the lemon. Got a lemon fridge once from LG. Can't bring myself to buy anything from them - ever. A commerical comes on now and I talk to the TV. Is that a bad thing?

With all the holiday baking I could get out of, do you think I'd have problems with my oven....no! But it's with the dumb garbage disposal on my sink giving me problems. Too bad, because I'll still have to do dishes. Drat.

Ha, ha, ha - so I am not the only one not baking. original excuse - no cream of tartar & other special ingredients - aka baking soda & butter...
New excuse - can you think of one for me?
Don't sabotage my oven though... We are in love. Roasted every vegetable I can think of.... YUM
Yikes, what a scary thing! Glad it was easily fixed though. I like the idea of sabotaging the oven for the holidays. I used to wonder why our TV was always broken in the summer...I "get it" now.
Just think--you didn't need the calories anyway!

When my inlaws came to my son's graduation, the oven died. We had to order the one that would fit in the wall space, took 2 1/2 weeks. They were here for 3, so not alot of baking! My mother in law thought I was very clever to have this happen at that time! (Hee, Hee, Hee!!!)
