Knotty Problems

The Janome automatically knots the thread when you begin zig-zagging, but after almost two years, I finally realized that to keep the knot on the underside, you have to hold the BOBBIN thread.   Then you can cut the top thread short and pop the knot to the back by tugging the bobbin thread.  If you hold the top thread or no thread, the knot and the bobbin thread always pop up and look ugly.

Two or three thoughts:  why did it take me so long to figure this out, why did no one tell me this when I took a class on the machine, and why did Janome design it that way?  It requires some contortion, as you can see.  When you end the stitching, the machine knots the thread, and then the scissors tool cuts the thread and pulls the knot to the back.  Pretty slick.  Wouldn't it have been nice to pull the knot to the back at the beginning too?

No matter though.  I'm thrilled to have figured this out.  It improves the look of the stitching tremendously.

Kudos for figuring that one out! Do you think the beginning knot would form on the back if the bobbin thread were still connected to a previously laid stitch line? A few stitches made in the margin perhaps?

Honestly. Just reaffirms my conviction that these sewing machines are not (no pun intended) designed by people who sew!

There are things about my Bernina that I learned about that I would have never guessed. Trial and error:)

Do I spy Hoffman Challenge fabric in the background?

You can do it, Kay! We've still got 6 weeks or so... :)

I wish I could say something that was clever and cute. All I can share really is that it took me3 years to figure out that I had a "needle down" feature. My Pfaff is an older model so it wasn't automatic and I didn't know what that button on the left was. I never press buttons apparently and I certainly never look them up to see what they mean. Sheesh.

...oh my gosh are you really doing the "H" challenge? I thought we were going to skip this year so this is big news!

I don't think my Pfaff will do that. Maybe I should read the manual...

I am guilty of just figuring out how to move my needle to the left and right in tiny increments. well I knew it moved to the left but never figured out the right. I've had the machine about 10 years.

I will confess I do not read the book unless the place is on fire!

my janome doesn't knot the thread, that sounds cool, but whenever I satin stitch the edge I end up with mess at the corner, so today I held onto the bobbin thread and no build-up of thread. helpful tip no matter how it's used. You'll make the deadline . . .
